PRIMARY FUNCTION / PRIMARY GOALS / OBJECTIVES:
This position exists to support the pharmacist in completing the duties associated with entering and managing drug therapy orders, fulfilling and dispensing prescriptions, ordering and managing pharmacy inventory, maintaining pharmacy records and other professional activities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system by

  • Assist the pharmacist in the practice of pharmacy in accordance with federal, state, and local regulat! ions, HIPAA guidelines, and corporate and departmental policie! s and procedures.
  • Interpret physician’s prescription orders and enter this information into the core pharmacy system.
  • Enter patient demographic, health insurance, and prescription information into the pharmacy information system and notify the physician of any incomplete or incorrect prescription information.
  • Enter supplies (e.g. needles, syringes, sharps containers, etc.) or educational materials into the pharmacy system or add these supplies to the pharmacy order for fulfillment and dispensing.
  • Respond to questions from and interact with other health care professionals working in the pharmacy to assure accurate provision of services to the patient.
  • Screen new prescriptions for legality and therapeutic appropriateness (correct strength, dose for the patient, and diagnosis).
  • Verify and document missing/conflicting information with physician, within legal limits of pharmacy technician authority. Understand which issues ! a pharmacist only, must resolve, and refer appropriately.
  • Assist the pharmacist with filling and labeling prescriptions.
  • Print, inspect, and reconcile prescription labels.
  • Pick correct drug and inspect prior to pharmacist verification.
  • Package products, ship FedEx, and resolve any shipping system errors.
  • Assist in the monthly inventory count and prepare reports to assist the pharmacist in procuring appropriate quantities of drug product and commodities.
  • Maintain an awareness of developments in the community and pharmaceutical fields that relate to job responsibilities and integrate them into practice.
  • Maintain current licensure and CE requirements as necessary.
  • Assist other pharmacy technicians to assure that patient orders are completed on time and that good workflow is maintained.
  • Assist in training and serve as a mentor for new pharmacy technicians.
  • Perform special projects as assig! ned by Pharmacy Solutions Management.
  • Coordinate workflow and ! resolve processing problems in the assigned area.
  • Write SOPs for processes within the work group.
  • Recommend process/systems improvement to Pharmacy Solutions Management.
  • Provide support and assistance to coordination and assembly of patient and physician mailings.
  • Complete all tasks in a professional and ethical manner
  • Additional responsibilities may be added as deemed necessary for the business by Pharmacy Solutions Management.
ACCOUNTABILITY / SCOPE:
This position is accountable for the accurate review and entry of prescription data information into the core pharmacy system for reimbursement processing and prescription fulfillment/dispensing. This position must identify missing. incorrect, or improper prescription information and elevate it to the pharmacist for verification and confirmation. This position must have a solid understanding of good pharmacy practices and will be responsible for compliance wit! h all pharmacy regulations and HIPAA guidelines. This position will support the pharmacists in all aspects of the practice of pharmacy and will be required to meet all established performance metrics.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required. Associate's degree required.
  • Individuals must meet applicable Pharmacy Technician licensure and certification requirements within 15 days of their employment start date in accordance and compliance with the Illinois Pharmacy Practice Act.
Knowledge of applicable regulations and standards affecting Pharmaceutical Products (e.g. CFR 210/211, cGMP) specifically,

  • 1-2 years pharmacy technician experience required.
  • Experience in specialty, hospital, or infusion pharmacy desired
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and ability to read prescriptions accurately
  • Understanding of basic pharmacy calculations and mathematical concepts.
  • Knowled! ge of specialty pharmacy products, trade and generic names, packaging a! nd quantities preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of infusion products, ambulatory pumps, and administration supplies
  • Understanding of insurance programs and third party payment systems.
  • Competent using computer systems and ability to type at least 30 words per minute.
  • Competent in using a Windows environment including: Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • General knowledge of supplies and other equipment used to self administer and infuse medications.
  • Can function as a team player with other associates in a complex, high energy environment.
  • Ability to read write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Professional communication skills.
  • Courteous attitude toward patients, health care professionals, clients, and fellow employees.
  • Acts with int! egrity and exhibits Abbott's core values throughout all job functions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Worked as a contractor in Pharmacy Solutions for at least 9 months as of April 1, 2013 and met the team’s performance & attendance standards.

Significant Work Activities and Conditions

Continuous sitting for prolonged periods ( more than 2 consecutive hours in an 8 hour day), Keyboard use (greater or equal to 50% of the workday)
