The Perioperative Nurse is a professional registered nurse, qualified by education and recent operating room experience to provide direct patient care and specializes in perioperative nursing practice. Perioperative is used as an encompassing term to incorporate the three phases of the patientÂ's surgical experience. This includes the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative surgical phases of care. Practice refers to expected behavioral patterns and technical activities performed in all phases of surgical care. He/She possesses intimate knowledge of regulatory requirements, VHA guid! elines, utilization of organizational processes, clinical docu! mentation requirements, current standards of care, evidence based practices and compliance guidelines.

On October 1st, 2010, the North Chicago VA Medical Center integrated with the Naval Health Clinic, Great Lakes to form the Captain James A Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC). The facility is located just 13 miles south of the Illinois/Wisconsin border approximately equidistant between Chicago and Milwaukee. Offering a choice of three international airports, the excitement of the 'Big City' with the beauty of the rural countryside, there are countless activities to engage a wide variety of personal hobbies and interests. The facility itself has opened a new parking structure and a new outpatient clinical addition. KEY REQUIREMENTS

DUTIES:
Tour of Duty: ONE (1) full-time position AM (0700-1530) including afterhours and weekend on-call requirements.

The Perioperative Nurse functional role includes specialization in perioperative nursing practice encompassing the three phases of the patien! tÂ's surgical experience, responsible for preoperative assessment and p! ostoperative evaluation, provides individualized direct care with emphasis on the intraoperative period, organizing and coordinating the clinical components in response to individual healthcare needs and care continuum in multiple settings. The goals are to center services around the patient, to foster patient self-managed care, and maximize efficient and cost-effective use of health care resources. The Perioperative Nurse utilizes all avenues of resources available to provide safe and efficient timely coordination of quality health care and services. The scope of practice will include but is not limited to the role of scrub/instrument and circulating nurse.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
a. Applies the nursing process to systems or processes at the unit/team/ workgroup level to improve care and coordinate/plan direct patient care with a multidisciplinary group.

b. Provides nursing care in accordance with the established stan! dards of practice and follows policies and procedures.

c. Initiates problem solving identification and seeks for a timely resolution utilizing the plan do check method of performance improvement process.

d. Acts as a steward in providing resources through a cost effective patient care.

e. Completes preoperative assessment forms within 24 hours of surgical procedure and is able to utilize/formulate an individualized plan of care that takes into consideration issues such as patient teaching instructions, intra-operative/post-operative needs and expected outcomes.

f. Monitors patientÂ's condition intra-operatively through vital signs, observation of skin color and turgor, emotional states and formulates/utilize nursing diagnosis based on those observations.

g. Takes immediate actions in a timely manner based on evidence based practice and outcomes on results of monitoring and observations to achieve optimal outcomes.

h. Gen! erates decisions and takes action in an ethical manner and acts as reso! urce to patients and colleagues.

i. Capable to articulate ethical principles with regards to issues as advanced directives and patient care decision making.

j. Demonstrates awareness/sensitivity of patient/family member needs and their level of anxiety and utilizes tact and understanding in interactions.

k. Employs elements related to patient safety, effectiveness and cost in planning an effective and efficient patient care.

l. Identifies principles of infection control and aseptic techniques and adheres the principles into everyday practice.

m. Proficient and consistent in demonstrating proper maintenance and expenditure of equipment(s) in the Operating Room.

n. Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies utilized in the Operating Room and communicates with purchasing staff to procure quality constituents in a timely and cost effective manner.

o. Able to efficaciously exhibit the knowledge and mastery of skills! detailed in the competency assessment checklist including the expertise and proficiencies required to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served on a daily basis.

p. Experience to properly and politely relate to internal and external customers, uphold the confidentiality of patient/employee information and function in a safe and sound manner.

q. Demonstrates the understanding of identified alterations associated with the principles of human growth and development, assess data reflective of the patientÂ's altered status, interpret acquired facts to identify age-specific conditions and apply the knowledge to provide the individualized patient care to restrain declining level of patient function and activity.

r. Effectively collaborates with all levels of the health care team. This includes,but is not limited to clinics, inpatient departments, physicians, nurses, other health care providers such as Pharmacists, Social Workers! , Psychologists, Physical Therapists, Dieticians and other outpatient d! epartments, ancillary services, community resources, etc.

s. Ensures instruction to the patient and the family based on identified learning needs. Assesses the family's knowledge base, health status expectations, and the potential for the family member acting as the primary care giver if necessary. Assists with the development of activities and methods to ensure information is articulated and disseminated to staff.

t. Acts as charge nurse, on a rotating basis, in accordance with departmental policy and direction, in both a professional and appropriate manner. Assists fellow staff members in the safe movement and care of patients, through the perioperative continuum.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Requirements

:

Citizen of the United States. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropri! ate State-accrediting agency

AND

accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC; renamed ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Additional Requirements:
1. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a Bachelor's Degree in a health-care related field.

2. At least one (1) year of RN perioperative nursing practice experience.
3. Active, current certification in ALL of the following: BLS, ACLS and PALS.

Preferred Requirements

:

1. Certification as a CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room) or CRNFA (Certified Registered Nurse Frist Assistant)

Physical/Functional Requirements

:

The individual must have the physical ability to perform job-related duties which require lifting, standing, bending, transferring, stooping, stretching, walking, pushing, and/or pulling.
