Participates in a variety of clinical research projects/studies involving various modalities of treatment for patients, including multi-centered cooperative group and intergroup trials at a national level, multi-institutional pharmaceutical trials, and single and multi-centered trials, designed, implemented, and coordinated in the Section. Participates in established and future research programs. Provides assistance with IRB submission. Instructs the investigator and research staff on the submission process and provides instructional material for reference. Works with PI, sponsoring agencies, Medicine Administration, and Office of Research Service to assist with amendment submission, changes or corrections to protocols/and or consent forms. Works with administrators to submit and revise clinical trial agreements. Assists in setting up regulatory documents, shadow file systems, databases, screening logs, adverse experience reporting mechanism, and r! egulatory binders. Trains and participates in trial related ac! tivity from the initial entry to complete follow-up of patients enrolled into research protocols. Evaluates all lab results for signs of toxicity or complications related to either the treatment or disease. Reports adverse drug reactions and submits the appropriate documentation to the FDA, NCI and IRB. Coordinates all follow-up lab tests specified by the study and additional tests at the discretion of the P.I. to evaluate toxicities and treatment. Educates potential research subjects concerning clinical aspects of their disease, purpose and nature of the protocol, and impact on the patient should they agree to participate (i.e. treatment schema, tests, clinic visits, etc). Teaches patients and their family members how to administer injections and signs and symptoms of side effects. Provides family education depending on patient's illness and route of medication delivery. Develops resources and materials for patient and family teaching if none exist. Provides in-servicing a! nd educating both the nursing units and lab staff regarding upcoming and ongoing protocols. Assists in recruiting patients for identified clinical trials.

The Section of Hematology/Oncology has a proud and long tradition of excellence in research-based patient care and clinical discovery. Ranked among the finest cancer programs in the country, the Section is comprised of nationally and internationally known faculty with expertise in all major types of malignancies, blood disorders, and experimental therapies. Major emphasis is given to translational research and the investigation of important laboratory observations in the clinic. One of the only institutions to have clinical trials in Phase I, II, and III of drug development, the distinguished faculty have ongoing investigations in each of these phases.

Unit Job Summary

Research nurse: Participate in the conduct of clinical research trials involving various modaliti! es of cancer treatment for oncology patients. Responsible for the coord! ination and care of patients in a disease specific area receiving non-protocol cancer treatment. The research trials will include multi- centered cooperative group and intergroup trials at a national level, multi-institutional pharmaceutical trials and single and multi-centered trials (Phase I, Phase II, In-house, Investigator Initiated) designed, implemented and coordinated in the Section. Participate in established and future research programs in the Section of Hematology/Oncology. Serve as liaison between Primary Investigator, sponsoring agent, patient, patient family members, referring physicians, community physicians, pharmacist, statistician and other members of the multidisciplinary and research team.

Education

Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois from the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX) required.

Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.

Oncology Nursing Certification ! (OCN) preferred.

Experience

Five years of experience in nursing with demonstrated knowledge about home care, palliative care, advance directives, pain management, symptoms control, and/or discharge planning preferred.

Competencies

Fundamental working knowledge of clinical research required.

Knowledge of patient care fundamentals, including aseptic principles and techniques required.

Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional and respectful manner required.

Excellent verbal and written communication required.

Ability to read documents or instruments required.

Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks with occasional interruptions required.

Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations required.

Ability to solve problems by applying math or reasoning principles required.
