The Pharmacist is responsible for daily operation of the NU Health Service Pharmacy which is a closed-door pharmacy limited to serving currently enrolled Northwestern students. This position prepares, reviews, and ! dispenses prescriptions. The Pharmacist orders prescription medications, vaccines and OTC items. This position ensures Pharmacy operates consistently with relevant State and Federal regulations; NU and department policies and procedures; and accreditation standards.
Must be physically capable of standing extended periods of time and be able to perform heavy lifting associated with restocking of pharmacy inventory. Periodic overtime as necessary related to the schedule of hours of operation for the Pharmacy for closing processes at the end of the business day.
Specific Responsibilities:
Enters and fills prescriptions utilizing Pro Pharm One (pharmacy software application) and Point and Click Solutions (healthcare information system);
Verifies patient's enrollment status and insurance/prescription coverage;
Reviews prescription for accuracy using appropriate cross-checking and verification processes;
Checks (or adds) patient profile, enter ! prescription(s);
Verifies drug interaction and allergies a! ll via pharmacy application;
Dispenses prescriptions and counsel;
Answers any patient questions concerning prescription and OTC medications;
Monitors and stocks pharmacy inventory;
Orders prescription drugs, vaccines, and OTC items through primary drug wholesalers consistent with established departmental and NU purchasing policies and procedures;
Provides recommendations on group purchasing agreements and vendors supplying the Pharmacy;
Coordinates scheduling and review of annual pharmacy inventory for NU financial reporting;
Participates in Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Quality Management Committee;
Ensures mechanisms are in place related to standards of practice for pharmacy operations to ensure compliance with all relevant accreditation standards from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and other regulatory agencies;
Develops and coordinates a variety of quality assurance processes to ensure a pro! gram of Continuous Quality Improvement is in place for Pharmacy operations that includes peer review and adverse incident reporting;
Ensures licenses for the Pharmacy and the Pharmacy staff are valid and current;
Submits license applications and renewal processes as appropriate in a timely manner to ensure no lapse in license term;
Interacts with clinic providers as appropriate to address patient quality of care issues related to medications;
Presents drug information upon request;
Updates providers with new drug information, discontinued medications etc.;
Develops queries/reports using Pro Pharm One software on various aspects of Pharmacy operations and utilization for the NUHS Annual Report, processes related to Pharmacy reporting to the internal Quality Management Committee and other assignments as necessary;
Writes and proposes policy and procedure statements as necessary to manage Pharmacy operations consistent with applicable regulations an! d accreditation standards;
Addresses and responds to all issues of ! regulatory compliance related to Pharmacy operations in a timely manner;
Manages all Pharmacy records (hard copy and electronic) consistent with applicable regulations, accreditation standards, department and NU policies;
Communicates services, policies and other relevant information to users of the Pharmacy and Health Service staff;
Supervises and trains Pharmacy Technician (1.0 FTE) and other temporary pharmacy staff;
Schedules Pharmacy staff to ensure consistent and reliable staffing for hours of operation;
Collaborates with supervisor on recruitment of Pharmacy as necessary;
Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
A PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
A valid Illinois Pharmacist license;
Must pass background investigation check;
At least one year of ! related experience in an outpatient or retail pharmacy in addition to the minimum qualifications listed above;
Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in processing prescriptions and duties related to daily pharmacy operations;
Ability to provide a high level of customer service and work effectively with staff, students and the public in a Pharmacy, which can have cycles of high prescription volume for processing;
Strong competency in using pharmacy application software to process prescriptions and the associated transactions with Prescription Benefit Managers and develop queries/reports to acquire data on Pharmacy operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
3 or more years of progressive responsibilities in clinic or retail pharmacy supervisory experience of pharmacy technicians;
Strong competency using pharmacy software for processing prescriptions and experience developing workflow solutions for pharmacy processes based on effective uti! lization of information technology resources;
Relevant experience a! nd knowledge of standards of practice and Continuous Quality Improvement processes for pharmacy;
Strong written communication skills sufficient to develop policy and procedure statements, and a variety of reports concerning pharmacy operations and utilization.
