Associate Directors of Pharmacy are registered pharmacists responsible for leading personnel, financial, operational, clinical, and research reso! urces within the Department of Pharmacy Services to assure medication use is safe, effective, and aligned with evidence-based best practices and regulatory standards. Through various assignments within the department, these leaders manage pharmacy distributive services, facilitate drug utilization initiatives, integrate clinical pharmacy programs, oversee pharmacy information systems, advance medication safety, and assure regulatory compliance. They manage central and satellite pharmacy areas as well as decentralized pharmacy practice and are accountable for the financial performance and budgetary adherence of their assigned areas and programs. Associate Directors of Pharmacy also directly manage the activities of pharmacists and technicians and are actively involved in their areas of oversight to assure pharmacy staff remain competent and engaged in customer service, standardized work, and lean processes. These leaders are proficient in project management and proactively u! se data analysis techniques to track, benchmark, and communica! te the outcomes of their areas to assure operational, clinical quality, and financial targets are achieved.
As members of the pharmacy management team, Associate Directors of Pharmacy collaborate with management peers to support all pharmacy operations and programs. They assist in the development of goals for the department and work with other managers and key individuals such as physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel to facilitate the accomplishment of these goals. Associate Directors of Pharmacy work closely with institutional leaders to establish quality infrastructures within the department and advance pharmacy services throughout the medical center. They also actively identify practice related issues which require evaluation and facilitate research projects, quality improvement initiatives, or healthcare provider education as needed to advance practice. Associate Directors of Pharmacy also precept student and resident experiences and lead the develop! ment of pharmacy staff training competencies. In short, Associate Directors of Pharmacy set and model the standard for excellence for pharmacy practice and design pharmacy programs to collaboratively advance the Comprehensive Pharmacy Practice model.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
1) Graduate of an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy.
2) Doctor of Pharmacy or other advanced degree required. MHA, MBA, Masters of Science, or other advanced degree highly preferred.
Experience:
1) Completion of ASHP accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice, PGY-2 Specialty Pharmacy, or PGY-2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency required.
2) Clinical, operational, and administrative experience (5-7 years) in a hospital setting.
3) Exceptional aptitude or knowledge may be considered in lieu of experience. Extensive clinical experience and development may be considered in lieu of formal training.
4) Pharmacy leade! rship experience required, with formal leadership training or superviso! ry experience preferred.
Knowledge & Attributes:
1) Knowledge of contemporary hospital/clinical practice and service.
2) Knowledge of and proficiency with general hospital operations and regulatory compliance.
3) Knowledge of computers (word processing etc.), technology, and automation systems.
4) Strong written and verbal communication skills.
5) Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and support personnel.
6) Ability to define departmental or program problems/needs and associated solutions.
7) Ability to integrate clinical and distributive pharmacy services with quality improvement, teaching, research, and professional development activities.
8) Significant general clinical knowledge and expertise in traditional therapeutics and patient centered care.
9) Significant knowledge and expertise in advanced pharmacy practice, specialty medication therapy management, ! and specialty evidence-based medicine in area appropriate for clinical assignments.
10) Strong teaching and precepting skills and expertise in experiential training.
11) Strong project and change management skills.
12) Personal leadership qualities and business acumen essential to operate effectively within the institution and advance the profession and practice of pharmacy.
Relationships:
1) Associate Directors of Pharmacy practice pharmacy at UCMC under the authority bestowed to them by the UCMC Pharmacist in Charge as licensed according to the Illinois Pharmacy Practice Act (225 ILCS 85/).
2) Associate Directors of Pharmacy report directly to the Executive Director of Pharmacy or Chief Pharmacy Officer and work collaboratively with administrative staff, pharmacist staff, and technical staff to support department initiatives.
3) Associate Directors of Pharmacy have frequent interactions with physicians, nurs! es, other members of the healthcare team, students, residents, and exte! rnal professional groups.
4) Associate Directors of Pharmacy directly supervise pharmacists, technicians, and other staff as assigned.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
1) Eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the state of Illinois (complete licensure process within 60 days of employment).
2) ASHP accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice, PGY-2 Specialty Pharmacy, or PGY-2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency required.
3) Board Certification in area of expertise is strongly encouraged.
